week 9: reflection on concordancer

On April 4, 2013, Thursday, we learned about concordancer. Concordancer is the basic tool for corpus linguist. Concordancer is defines as a collection of the occurrences of word form. From the lecture, we learn that parts of concordance are on the affixes and the collocation of the words. Collocation is the word that after being join together people will immediately know the meaning of the words or what is the word referred to. In order to understand more on concordance related with collocation, our lecturer asked the students to give some examples of the collocation words that we know. Some example that we and our fellow classmate give to our lecturer is red rose, red light, black coffee and others. We also know now that not all join words is collocation.

As to make us more understand on what concordance and it is usage, our lecture had asked us to open one software that is related to concordance. The software is called webcorp. Webcorp is one of the examples of software for simple concordance. From the software we learn how to use it. Besides that, we also learn what webcorp is used as by the corpus linguist.

Not only that, we also gain something that is related with our future. By means of something related to our future is that we know the scope for the concordance for corpus linguist. As our lecturer had said in the class we as in students might want to further our studies to master level can take this course as our course after we have complete our studies and graduated. . This is because not many people have the deep knowledge about corpus studies. Our lecture wants to expose the undergraduate students as similar to what the postgraduate students do. Thus, the lecture today is as an open eyes and minds that there are many more courses other than what have been offered for the students.
